Should pregnant smokers be thrown in jail or left alone with their conscience & cigarettes?

Child abuse can be PHYSICAL - shaking, hitting, beating, burning, or biting a child.

Child abuse can be EMOTIONAL - constantly blaming or putting down a child; excessive yelling, shaming.

Child abuse can be SEXUAL - incest, any forced sexual activity, exposure to sexual stimulation not appropriate for the child’s age.

Child abuse can be NEGLECT - a pattern of failure to provide for the child’s physical needs, such as food, clothing, shelter, and medical care; a pattern of failure to provide for the child’s emotional needs, such as affection, attention, and supervision.

But let me ask you this.

I personally know a woman who smokes cigarettes like a chimney. We are not friends just acquaintances. Normally I wouldn’t care because basically my philosophy is: “To each his own.”

However, this particular individual is at least 3 to 4 months pregnant. And to me, that’s a form of child abuse even though it doesn’t fall within the normal child abuse guidelines.

Does anybody else out there think that a woman who smokes cigarettes while she is pregnant is abusing her child? If so, what particular name would you call the abuse?

Also, this woman is totally aware of diseases like down syndrome, emphysema, lung cancer, asthma, etc. but she keeps on puffin’ away despite several warnings from her friends.

To me, the bitch is totally selfish! If given the choice, I doubt if the unborn child would want their mama smoking cigarettes and putting his or her health at risk.

Which is the operative word, “choice”, because the unborn child has no say in the matter. Which is totally unfair! Why the hell would you breathe in a harmful substance like nicotine into your unborn child’s delicate lungs?

For the unborn child’s sake, have some willpower for god’s sake and not smoke! Put the unborn child’s welfare before your own! That’s what a good parent does.

I have another question for you. Do you think that there should be some kind of repercussions for women like this such as jail time, fines or having custody taken away for this or do you think that non-smokers like me should keep their two cents to themselves?

Let me know your opinion on this topic.

I TOTALLY agree with your notion, and why just the pregnat woman, but I guess all smokers should be jailed, for life, and then they can puff it out at each other and leave us alone!

Pregnant women who smoke or indulge in other vices like drinking or drugs are the worst kind of child abusers. They should be definitely jailed.

But before that they should be psychologically counseled because many women indulge in these vices when they are mentally disturbed.

I totally agree with you on this topic....unfortunately, I am with a 7 month prego fiance and she smokes herself. I brought up the issue with her and she tends to get defensive about the fact. I think it should be called ”Smoke Exposure Abuse” It sounds pretty cheesy, but it sounds reasonable to me!

I think you should take your fiance to a counsellor as he will be able to convince her more easily than you for he knows the secret of influencing the mind of the people which you might not be aware of.

I feel the same. My wife smokes, but NEVER smoked while pregnant, and doesn’t smoke around the children now either..It’s funny how these same women will put down pregnant drug addicts and alcholics non-stop while sharing cancer-sticks with THEIR own babies.

If smoking harms the child, the preg women must be counselled to refrain from doing so.

Ramesh, I agree. Throwing a woman in jail might be too harsh. But forcible counseling along with community service might be good enough.

I agree with you, the women who smokes during pregnancy should think once for her unborn child that why should he/she is suffering because of her bad habbit.

I dont agree, it seems a little harsh. Like Mr. Ramesh wrote, they should be counselled.

Shown the risks and facts, and let her make the choice. Its her child after all.

A pregnant women who has the habit of smoking should be counselled as soon as she conceives about the harmful effects of smoking on the foetus. It will surely make her change her habit as the love that a mother develops for the child changes the whole attitude of a woman.

Are you retarted? Doctors strongly agree that women who smoked before getting pregnant are to slack back but not quit cold turkey due to the stress it could cause the baby.

I can only imagine what your mother did while pregnant with you. Most women will never tell the truth.
Maybe thats why your retarted.
